Penn Campus Recreation

• Consulting a physician and receiving proper clearance prior to beginning an exercise regimen is strongly encouraged.
• Exercise may cause dizziness, exhaustion, or other symptoms that may put you at risk for injury. 
• If you experience any physical abnormality immediately stop exercising and contact the facility staff on duty.

• Penn Campus Recreation membership is available to the following groups:
  • Penn Students
    • Full-time students pay for their Recreation Membership by being accessed the general fee on their student bill.
      • Undergraduate Students
      • Graduate Students
  • Visiting students / Part-time students
    • Visiting and Part-time students must purchase a membership to have access to Campus Recreation Facilities.
  • Penn Faculty/Staff
    • Active employment at Penn is required to maintain membership.
    • Faculty/Staff can also sponsor memberships for their Spouse/Dependents.
  • Affiliates
    • Active employment at an affiliate institution is required to maintain membership.
      • HUP Staff
      • CHOP Staff
      • Penn Medicine Staff
  • Charter Membership
    • This membership is only open to members who enrolled during the initial opening of the Pottruck Center. This membership is not open to new members.
  • Penn Alumni
    • An individual who has completed a degree program at the University of Pennsylvania

• A valid PennCard is required for entrance into any of the Campus Recreation facilities. This includes when a patron uses the barcode scanner via the Fusion Go app.
• Patrons will swipe or scan their bar code at the front desk when entering the facility.
• An exception can be made if a patron does not have their PennCard, but a government issued photo I.D. MUST be provided.
  • If a patron forgets their PennCard more than two times in any given semester, they will be denied entry into any Recreation facility.
• Giving your PennCard or access credentials to someone else to gain entry to any Campus Recreation facility is strictly prohibited and will result in an immediate two-week suspension.

• Dependent Members and guests must be 18 years of age or older to access fitness areas and weight rooms.
• Dependent members and guests under 18 years of age must enter the facility with an adult/guardian who must also remain in the facility while being used by the dependent.
• Dependent members and guests 17 years of age and under must be directly supervised by an adult/guardian and can only access the pool, climbing wall, and basketball courts.
• Children 4 years of age and older are not permitted in opposite sex locker rooms. Single person changing rooms are available in both facilities.
• A guest pass is not required for children under the age of 6.

• Facility hours are subject to change by Penn Campus Recreation. Changes can be found on the facility calendar webpage.
• Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.
• Report all incidents, accidents, and injuries to a Campus Recreation staff member.
• Storage of Personal Belongings
  • Bags and personal belongings must be secured in a locker and are not permitted in fitness areas or weight rooms. Individuals will be required to stop their workout and secure their items in a locker.
  • Personal items should not be left unattended within the facilities.
  • Members/guests are prohibited from placing items in a day use locker and leaving the facility. Likewise, members are required to clean out their day use locker prior to building closure.
• Food and Drink
  • Water or sports drinks in a closed, resealable container are allowed. All other drinks and glass containers are prohibited in activity areas.
  • The atrium has a seating area where eating is allowed.
• Bikes, Skateboards, and Scooters
  • Bikes, skateboards, scooters, roller-skates, and rollerblades are not allowed to be operated in the recreation facility under any circumstances.
  • Electric scooters are not permitted to be stored within the recreation facility.
• Pets and Animals
  • Pets, except for service animals, are not allowed. Certified service animals are permitted.
• Organized group activities and/or any type of coached workout or personal training may not occur in any activity areas. Such activities must be approved by the Campus Recreation Staff (e.g. personal training not affiliated with Campus Recreation is not allowed.)
  • Organized group activity is defined as a group of 4 or more people participating in the same activity. Said groups will be required to register and rent out an appropriate space.
• Campus Recreation reserves the right to implement any interim policies needed to protect the health and safety of the facility and its users.

• Members may not interfere with employee duties, use obscene language, or engage in verbal or physical abuse of employees or fellow members.
• Use of tobacco products is prohibited inside any building or within 20 feet of the entrance to any building in accordance with University Policy (704.1). The tobacco policy covers all smoking methods, including but not limited to the use of electronic smoking devices (e-cigarettes, e-cigars, e-pipes) and hookah-smoked products.
• No individual may use the Recreation Center for personal or monetary gain. Patrons may not solicit from other members, guests, or staff.
• Sparring is prohibited in any and all open fitness space(s).
• Use of steroids and/or other illegal substances is prohibited.
• Sexual behavior and/or sexual misconduct is prohibited.

Campus Recreation staff reserves the right to ask a patron to leave and deny facility and/or program access for policy violation.

• Any individual who refuses to comply with facility policies, guidelines or staff requests or allows unauthorized access to Campus Recreation facilities or programs may be asked to leave the facility and/or have their privileges suspended or revoked.
• Individuals that have violated policy may have their Campus Recreation memberships suspended and will be required to meet with a designated Campus Recreation professional staff member. That meeting must be arranged in advance and will occur during normal business, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • The individual will notification of any applicable suspension or sanctions.
  • The Length of suspension could be any length of time including permanently.
• Campus Recreation staff may also refer students to further investigation and discipline.
• All decisions are final by the Director of Campus Recreation.

• The use of any photographic or video device is not permitted with Campus Recreation facilities.
  • This includes cameras, cell phones and wearable technology.
• Tripods and other peripheral equipment are prohibited.
• All requests to film, photograph, and interview are permitted only with prior written approval from a Campus Recreation Professional Staff Member.
• At times, Campus Recreation will be taking digital images, photographs, and or video of patrons for promotional and informational purposes.

Policy regarding waiver

                  The use of my name, portrait, picture, photograph or video as part of the University of Pennsylvania Campus Recreation Department. Penn, its employees, agents, successors, assigns and those acting with its permission or on its behalf, the right and permission to use, copyright, publish, republish and distribute any such recording, video or photographs of me. Understanding that any such recording, videotape and/or photographs belong to Penn and that I will not receive any payment or other compensation in connection with such recording, video or photographs or for any use of them by Penn. Penn may use such recording, video or photographs, in whole or in part, in any manner and in any media, including in composite, altered, or distorted form. Waived is any right that I may have to inspect or approve the finished products or materials containing my likeness and/or voice, or the printed matter that may be used in connection with such recording, video or photographs.  

• Phone calls, texts, and photography are strictly prohibited in any activity area.
• Cell phones may be used for listening to audio or using fitness-related applications.
• Members are permitted to use electronic handheld tablets on the fitness floor for personal viewing and/or audio use.
• Unauthorized use of any amplified music is prohibited.

• Boots, open toe footwear, pants with belts, cut off pants, excessive jewelry, jeans, non-athletic pants/shorts, and other non-athletic clothing are prohibited.
• Non-marking athletic shoes are required on all wood floors, including the Avnet Courts or fitness studios.
• Closed toe athletic footwear, t-shirts, and athletic shorts/pants must always be worn.
• Changing clothes cannot be done on the pool deck, sauna, atrium, hallways, restrooms, or other shared spaces not designed for that purpose.

• Patrons are responsible for the equipment they check out. 
  • If equipment is not returned, but found in the facility, a first-time warning will be given. 
  • If equipment is not returned, and can not be located, a suspension and replacement charge will be placed on their account. The replacement cost is decided by the retail cost of the same product and any additional fees.
    • After one week, if the fee is not paid, a suspension will be placed on the account.
• Repeat violators may face suspension of privileges.

Fitness Spaces

• Members are responsible for using the fitness equipment as it is intended to be used. Failure to comply may result in suspension or loss of membership privileges.
• Please be courteous to other members using equipment by immediately returning all weights, dumbbells, and bars to their proper areas.
• Weights must not be dropped from above the knees.
• The use of powdered chalk or any other powdered lifting substance is prohibited.
• It is each member’s responsibility to wipe off all strength and cardio equipment after use.
• Sneakers or weightlifting shoes are required at all times.
• The fitness center setup should not be altered (i.e., moving benches, rearranging weight trees, etc.)
• Use clips or weight collars each time free weights are used to prevent injuries.
• Personal workout equipment that may alter the manufacturer’s intended use and/or safety of a piece of equipment provided by Campus Recreation is prohibited.

Olympic Style Lifts

• Bumper plates and safety collars must be used at all times.
• 45lb Urethane Troy Plates are not permitted on the platforms.
• Only one person is permitted on the platform.
• Equipment should not be moved from this area.

Power Rack Lifters

• Bars must be unloaded, and plates must be re-racked when finished.
• Lifts performed outside the racks are not permitted – Olympic Lifting Platforms must be used.
• All lifts must be performed in the rack with the use of safety collars.
• Intentionally dropping weights from above the knee is not permitted in any fitness area.
• Loose chalk is not permitted in any fitness area.

Studio 409 is available for general use during normal facility hours. All other studios are closed to informal use. The following guidelines apply:

• Appropriate footwear is required. Only non-marking, athletic shoes may be worn.
• Use of the stereo system is prohibited. Individuals are permitted to bring their own source of music.
• Groups are not permitted to use this space without a reservation. Three or more people practicing together is deemed a group. Groups can reserve facilities by contacting the DRIA Business Development office.

General:

• All climbers must obtain a climbing wall membership during open climbing hours at the climbing office.
• All climbers must check in at the climbing wall desk with a Penn ID before climbing by presenting a valid membership or day-use pass
• Climbing is only permitted during posted open climb times
• All belayers must pass the belay certification test
  • Climbing Wall members interested in becoming belay certified must pass the belay test administered by a Climbing Wall Attendant.
    • Note: You must have another member of the wall willing to climb for you to complete your test.
  • To pass the test, you must successfully perform all safety checks and belay techniques without any assistance or instruction.
  • Learn to Belay classes will be coming later in the semester for those interested in learning the basic and becoming belay certified.
• Personal equipment used by climbers must be inspected by climbing wall staff
• Do not hold on to belay bars, lead climbing draws, or anchors at any time
• You must be 6 years old or older to use the climbing wall. Minors are required to have an adult present. The legal guardian must sign a minor consent form
• Shirts and closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times
• All injuries, no matter how minor, must be reported to staff
• Only climbing wall staff may move or tighten holds or fixed quickdraws
• Any actions perceived as dangerous or negligent could result in suspension of privileges

Bouldering:

• Patrons are not permitted to boulder above 12 feet at hand height
• Do not boulder under roped climbers
• It is recommended to have a spotter whenever bouldering. Down climbing is preferred

Sheerr Pool

The Sheerr Pool is open for recreational swim during posted hours. The following guidelines apply while using the pool:

• The use of the Sheerr Pool and on-deck sauna is prohibited unless supervised by a Campus Recreation lifeguard.
• Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied to the pool and be directly supervised by an adult parent/guardian. If the child can swim, the adult parent/guardian must be at the poolside. If the child cannot swim, the adult parent/guardian must be in the water with his or her child. Children that are not potty-trained must wear waterproof diapers, such as “Swimmers.”
• Appropriate swimming clothes are required. Thongs and street clothes are prohibited. Patrons may not use the bleachers to change.
• Circle swimming is required when more than two swimmers are in a lane.
  • Circle swimming in a lap lane is similar to driving a car; you need to always stay on the right side of the lane and swim in a counterclockwise direction.
• Patrons may not hang on lane lines.
• Only US Coast Guard approved swimming aids are permitted to be used in the pool. Inflatable armbands or “swimmies” are not allowed.
• Showering is required before entering the pool. Showers can be found both in the locker rooms and on the pool deck.

Sauna

• The sauna is open during recreational swim hours only.
• Pouring water (or liquid of any kind) on the sauna rocks or tampering with the heat sensor is prohibited.
• Proper attire is required to use the sauna.
• No one under the age of 18 is permitted in the sauna.

• Must be an active member of Pottruck Health and Fitness Center to book a Recovery Room reservation.
• Those deemed excessively sweaty or wet will not be allowed into their reservation.
• Recovery Room reservations are non-refundable and non-transferable to another guest or member.
• Guest(s) are not allowed to join a reservation. One person is allowed in each bay.
• If the member is late for a reservation, the patron will use the remaining time left. Sessions cannot extend beyond the 30 minutes past the scheduled start time.
• All equipment must be used in the manner that it is intended to be used in.
• The member is responsible for any damaged or missing equipment.
• All equipment must be cleaned and put back properly properly after the session.
• Consecutive Sessions are allowed; however, members must vacate the room during the disinfection time.
• Member must wear headphones if listening to sound during reservation.
• Bags are not allowed in the recovery room at any time.
• No food or drinks, except a closed water bottle is permitted.

Campus Recreation has several options available to members for locker use (Rental and Daily Use). The following guidelines apply for lockers:

• Daily use lockers are in the locker rooms (red lockers). Members must provide their own lock for locker room daily use lockers.
• Members are prohibited from leaving personal items in a day locker overnight. Locks will be cut off by staff and items removed at the end of each night.
• Personal locks are prohibited from use on annual rental lockers and are subject to removal by staff.
• Unattended bags/belongings that are in violation of the department’s bag policy will be removed by staff.
• Consumption of food in the locker rooms is prohibited.
• All patrons may use restrooms and locker rooms according to their gender identities.

• Valuables – Items such as wallets or cell phones are held in Membership Services. If the lost item includes any identifying information, staff from the Membership office will attempt to contact patrons directly. Items may be claimed in person during office hours and will require the presentation of photo identification.
• Non-Valuables – Items such as clothing or books are held for a period of two weeks. To claim items please have photo identification and ask for assistance at the front desk.
  • All items will be donated to a local charity after two weeks of storage.

• If a registered member or guest requires assistance from an attendant, the attendant is permitted to accompany the member or guest and assist without incurring a fee. The attendant is not permitted to participate in any personal physical activity.
• All required documents including applicable registration and a signed waiver must be on file. This policy does not apply to any person providing a specific service that is not medically necessary.

• In the event of inclement weather, Campus Recreation will attempt to accommodate the needs of on-campus residents who may wish to engage in recreational activities during campus closures or delays. Recreation facilities will remain open for as long as it is safe for patrons and staff.
• Recreational programming will run as close to the regular schedule as weather permits, but patrons may experience some cancellations or delays.
• All inclement weather updates will be posted on the campus recreation homepage (recreation.upenn.edu) and shared via social media accounts. Please make sure to check one of these locations before making a trip to a Recreational Facility.

Refund Policy:
All program, service and membership sales are final.  Refunds requested as the result of an unforeseen circumstance will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Director of Campus Recreation or Designee.  Approved exceptions/special circumstances are subject to prorating as well as processing fees.

 Payments made by credit card will be refunded to the original card used at the time of payment and can take 10 - 15 business days to process.
