Penn Campus Recreation

Full-time students pay for their Recreation Membership by being billed the general fee on their student bill. 

Visiting students / Part-time students must purchase a membership in order to have access to the Pottruck Center and Fox Fitness facilities. (See the ‘Membership Information’ page for pricing details.

Members can purchase 2 guest passes a day for a cost of $15 per person. If you're affiliated with the university but do not have a membership, you can purchase a day pass for the same price.

The current eligibility requirements to become a member of Campus Recreation is being a part of the Penn Community in the following ways as:

We do not offer community memberships.

We do offer a two week free trial. To be eligible, you have to have not previously held a purchased membership. (If you were once a student now employee, you would still be eligible). 

To redeem, visit the Membership office in the Pottruck Center.

Self-Guided Tour - 

If you want to take a tour on your own, leave an ID at the front desk with our Allied staff, and provided is a breakdown of both the Pottruck Health and Fitness and Fox Fitness Centers. This breakdown provides what types of equipment you will find in each space of the respective building. 

Guided Tour - 

Guided tours are offered at Pottruck Health and Fitness Center by one of the Rec Assistants (RA) staff members who are located at the front Walnut entrance of the building. They will take you through a tour of the space from top to bottom of what we have to offer. 

The Pottruck Health and Fitness Center has our highest influx of participants between 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm on weekdays. If you're looking for a less crowded time to use the facility, we suggest early in the mornings or after 8 pm in Pottruck. If you're looking for facility hours, they can be found on our home page on the right-hand side. These are subject to change but are best kept up in that location. 

Also you can find our facility counts that show the active number of members in the space based on the time stamp.

Please Note: In the case of scheduled maintenance or unexpected issues that require our facility or any of its spaces to close (for any amount of time), we make every effort to provide advance notice to reduce any inconvenience. Please be aware that our policy does not include refunds of membership or general fees for such closures.

Those who fall under this category are full-time, part-time, or temporary staff employed by the University of Pennsylvania and receive a Penn Card from the card center.

Adjunct, Visiting Faculty, and Temporary Staff must be sponsored by their School/Center/Department to receive a Penn Card. Once you receive a Penn Card you are eligible to purchase a membership.

All students at the University of Pennsylvania are eligible for memberships. If you're a full-time student, who is degree pursuant at the University of Pennsylvania, and assessed the “General Fee” on your university bill the membership cost is covered and you will have access for that semester/term.

If you're a part-time, visiting, or a student taking a gap year (1-year max), you are eligible to purchase a membership at a reduced rate.

Alumni are eligible to purchase a membership at the same rate as our faculty/staff. You must have an active Penn Card. To receive a Penn Card, please visit the card center on the second floor of the bookstore. There is a fee to purchase the card and you will need to bring a valid Government issued ID.

The supported affiliate groups are faculty/staff of UPHS, CHOP, and PennMed. Rates and options are the same as the faculty/staff of the university. Before purchasing, you must receive a Penn Card from the card center on the second floor of the university bookstore. With you, you will need to bring a valid Government picture ID and you will need to purchase this new identification card.

*If you're a CHOP employee, you must first obtain a PennKey via https://www.research.chop.edu/services/chop-pennkey-administration. 

Spouse/Dependents of university faculty/staff and students are eligible to purchase a membership. Prior to purchasing a membership, you must visit the Penn bookstore and receive a Penn card ID. You will have to pay a fee to receive the card and bring proof that shows the relationship. The card center is located on the second floor of the bookstore.

Single Day Pass - Each of the above groups may sponsor up to two people per day for a day pass. The member or affiliated party must be 18+, and if they are purchasing a day pass for themselves that counts as 1 of 2 sponsored guests. The sponsoring affiliated person is held accountable for any guests entering the facility.

Sponsored Guest - Any current student, faculty, staff, alumni or affiliate with an active recreation membership can sponsor up to 3 individual members equivalent to the length of their membership. If the sponsor’s membership becomes inactive, the sponsored guest’s membership will also become inactive. Sponsored member membership purchases require the sponsoring student/faculty/staff/alumni/affiliate member and the non-affiliate to both be present at the time of purchase. 

This membership will allow any previous membership eligible person to Sponsor the membership for someone outside of the Penn network for longer than a 1-day pass.

The first step in the process is to fill out the request form. Linked here, you will need to provide some of the information from both the active Penn Card Holder and the person wanting to receive one. Once filling out the form, wait for the next before visiting the Penn Card center on the second floor of the Penn Bookstore (3601 Walnut Street). Once you make the purchase for the ID card ($30), please visit the Recreation Membership office with the person sponsoring you at the next available time it is open. 

Both the Penn Card Center in the Bookstore and the Membership Office are open 9 am til 5 pm Monday through Friday. 

The membership covers facility access at both Pottruck and Fox Fitness. This a general access membership and the guest can purchase add-ons for group exercise and other class-based instruction like Personal Training, Weightlifting 101, and more. 

Sponsored Guest Membership holding patrons currently are unable to participate in Intramurals and Club Sports. 

The sponsored guest is able to purchase any membership that is of the same type as the person sponsoring them as long as the end date does not exceed the sponsors.

You have to be a full-time benefit eligible employee directly with the University of Pennsylvania.

The Human Resources/Campus Recreation membership program gives you two ways to save: 

Monthly membership for $27.50/month

• If you prefer more flexibility, choose a monthly recurring Faculty/Staff membership with a six-month minimum commitment to save 50% off the regular fee.

• Choose an annual membership with a rate of $300 for a savings of 50% off the regular fee ($600)

The deal has been renewed indefinitely so there is no fiscal year stop date as previously. 

We have received notice from Human Resources that this program is indefinite!

If you're an eligible participant for the discount and paying monthly for your membership, we will automatically switch your account over using the credit card on file for the September 1st charge.
