Outdoor Adventure Trips

Get out of the city and into nature with one of our Outdoor Adventures!  Studies have shown that spending time in the outdoors has significant physical health benefits, helps reduce stress, decreases anxiety, increases self-confidence and sharpens one’s focus.  Our trips are suited for all ability levels and are led by trained staff.  Transportation and all necessary equipment is provided for all trips.

Penn Outdoor Adventure trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Health & Fitness Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    IMG_2155Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, our outdoor climbing courses are for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  All courses are taught by an American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor.


    Ice Climbing @ The Catskills

    February 8th (Friday) to February 9th (Saturday)

    Trip Duration: 2 Days Friday 2/8 @ 5:00pm to Saturday 2/9 @ 9:00pm

    Cost: $250 Pottruck Member / $275 Non-Member

    Picture yourself climbing on frozen waterfalls on this one of a kind adventure. If you like climbing and you don’t mind the cold, then you will love ice climbing. Ice climbing utilizes technical equipment to ascend frozen waterfalls. Highly trained guides will provide professional instruction to help you get up the ice regardless of your ability level. Transportation, 1-night hotel stay, professional guides, instruction and all technical equipment is provided. No ice climbing experience is necessary, but climbing experience is preferred.

    Rock Climbing  Anchors Course @ Ralph Stover

    April 7th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 5:00pm

    Cost: $40 Pottruck Member / $50 Non-Member

    How do the ropes get up there? This course, taught by an American Mountain Guides Association certified Single Pitch Instructor, will teach you the skills and techniques to build your own top-rope climbing anchors. We will visit a local outdoor climbing destination and practice various anchor set-ups that will get you on your way to climbing outside on your own. No experience is necessary, but basic climbing knowledge is recommended.

    Rock Climbing @ Safe Harbor

    April 14th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Located along the banks of the Susquehanna River, the cliffs of Safe Harbor offer great climbing for all abilities. This man-made crag gives climbers an introduction into slab climbing, which rewards those with good footwork and balance. Safe Harbor’s riverside location often stays warm when the weather turns cool and is a great place to spot bald eagles. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

    Rock Climbing @ Ralph Stover

    May 3rd – Friday (Reading Days)

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Take a break during “Reading Days” and hang out with Penn Outdoor Adventures on a great rock climbing trip. Overlooking Tohickon Creek is the “High Rocks” portion of Ralph Stover State Park. Challenge yourself on the cliffs that reach 80ft in height. Climbers of all abilities can enjoy this local gem. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

  • Hiking and Backpacking

    IMG_2177Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.

     


    Spring Break Grand Canyon Hiking

    March 3rd to March 9th

    Trip Duration: 7 Days Sunday 3/3 to Saturday 3/9

    Cost: $500 Pottruck Member / $550 Non-Member

    Join Penn Outdoor Adventures for Spring Break as we explore the Grand Canyon and other beautiful hiking destinations in Arizona, including the Superstition Wilderness and Sedona. The trip will take place from Sunday March 3rd to Saturday, March 9th. We will be camping under the stars for the entire trip, taking day hikes into some of Arizona’s most iconic hiking destinations. Price includes: Ground Transportation (van) from Phoenix (AZ) airport to the Grand Canyon and back, Park entrance fees, All necessary camping equipment, Camping fees, A portion of food, and Guiding and instruction.     Day Hike @ French Creek

    March 24th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Enjoy a hike through the forests and rolling hills of French Creek State Park. This area is the childhood stomping grounds of Daniel Boone. The hike passes through several different forest types and past to lakes with the option of exploring a historic 1800’s farm and village. Transportation and guiding included.

    Day Hike @ Lehigh Gap

    April 6th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Hike to the top of Blue Mountain for some great views of the Lehigh Gap. This day hike will start at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center The hike will be long and can be steep, rocky and challenging at times, but the views from the top are well worth it. No experience is necessary. Transportation, guiding and instruction is provided.

    Day Hike @ Ridley Creek

    April 20th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Explore Ridley Creek State Park as we take a leisurely hike through a colonial plantation, along shimmering Ridley Creek and past the ruins of an 18th century farmhouse. No experience is necessary. Transportation, guiding and instruction is provided.

    Backpacking Weekend @ The Catskills

    April 26th (Friday) to April 28th (Sunday)

    Trip Duration: 3 Days Friday 4/26 @ 5:00pm – Sunday 4/28 @ 6:00pm

    Cost: $100 Pottruck Member / $125 Non-Member

    Spend the weekend backpacking in the beautiful Catskill mountains of upstate New York. The Catskill mountains are a rugged region with beautiful mountain vistas and serene lakes. The trip will leave on Friday evening and return Sunday afternoon. We will be primitive camping throughout the weekend with no access to running water or electricity. The trip is suited for all ability levels. No experience is required. All necessary equipment, transportation, guiding and instruction is included.

  • Paddle Sports 

    IMG_2210Take your adventure off shore with our water-based paddle sports.  Join us for a variety of paddle sports, whether you prefer Stand Up Paddleboarding at the beach, canoeing or kayaking down a lazy stream, or challenging the rapids on a whitewater rafting trip, we have something for everyone.  Participants must be able to swim in order to register.

     


    Learn to Kayak Course

    April 6th, 7th & 13th

    Trip Duration: 3 Days – Sat. 4/6 & Sun. 4/7 6:00pm to 8:00pm & Sat. 4/13, 8:00am – 5:00pm

    Cost: $75 Pottruck Member / $85 Non-Member

    Join Penn Rec for a 2-day “Learn to Kayak” course in the Sheerr Pool. We will be utilizing our fleet of packrafts, which are one person inflatable kayaks. Participants will learn the basics of flat-water kayaking, including paddle strokes, maneuvering, and safety. Pool sessions will take place on April 6th & 7th from 6-8pm. The course will culminate in an all-day packrafting trip on April 13th on a local waterway.

    Pack Rafting @ Valley Forge

    May 2nd- Thursday (Reading Days)

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 9:00am to 4:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Take a study break and relax on the water with this hiking/paddling combo trip. We will be visiting Valley Forge National Park, where we will take a leisurely 3 mile hike along the banks of the Schuylkill River and then paddle on the water back to our van, stopping at George Washington’s headquarters along the way. No experience required. All necessary equipment, transportation and instruction included.

  • Zip-Lining

    Get off the ground and into the trees with one of our zip-lining adventures.  We will visit a variety of zip-line and challenge courses around the Philly area, the Poconos, or on one of our extended break trips.  Zip-line adventures typically occur at least 20-30 feet off of the ground.  These trips are not recommended for those with a severe fear of heights.

  • Snow Sports

    PennRec StaffWhether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

     


    Downhill Skiing/Snowboarding @ Big Boulder

    January 27th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $80 Pottruck Member & Non-Member

    Hit the slopes as we head to the Pocono mountains for a day of skiing/snowboarding. Big Boulder resort offers great views of the surrounding Pocono mountains and offers 16 trails of varying difficulty, including terrain parks and tubing area. Price includes: Charter bus transportation and lift ticket.(Equipment Rentals and Lessons are an additional Fee)

    Cross Country Skiing @ High Point

    February 2nd – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 7:00am to 8:00pm

    Cost: $95 Pottruck Member & Non-Member

    Cross country skiing is a great form of exercise and a great way to stay active during the winter. We will be traveling to High Point Cross Country Ski Center in the mountains of Northern New Jersey to explore the 15Km of trails that are offered. Ski lessons will be offered by national certified staff. No experience necessary. Trail passes, equipment rentals, lessons and transportation is provided in price.

    Snowshoeing @ Hickory Run

    February 3rd – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $40 Pottruck Member / $50 Non-Member

    Enjoy this winter snowshoe hike through Hickory Run State Park in the beautiful Pocono mountains. Hike along frozen streams and through trails lined with giant rhododendrons. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Just outside of the Philly suburbs lies French Creek State Park. Hike the wooded trails that the famous frontiersman, Daniel Boone, once roamed growing-up. Enjoy with streams, woods, and lakes that make up the landscape of the state park. Price Includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

  • Extended Trips

    Take an Adventure for your academic break.  The Outdoor Adventure program offers a variety of adventures during Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter breaks.  Trips range from 4 to 7 days long and usually require extended travel time.  The extended trips visit some of most scenic outdoor locations regionally and nationally and may encompass several activity areas during one trip.  Interest and/or pre-trip meetings are typically required to participate in an extended trip.

  • Wilderness First Aid Courses 

    If you spend any time in the outdoors, it is good to know what to do if things go wrong.  Our wilderness medicine courses are taught by professional instructors from NOLS Wilderness Medicine.  Choose from a 2-day (16 Hour) Wilderness First Aid Course or a 9-day (80 Hour) Wilderness First Responder Course.  These courses are great for everyone, whether you’re a weekend warrior or an outdoor professional.

     


    Wilderness First Aid Course

    March 30th & 31st

    Cost: $250 for Penn Affiliates / $275 for Public

    Whether spending time in the backcountry is your passion or your profession, you should never have to ask, “What do I do now?” In this fast-paced and hands-on course, you will learn how to prepare for the unexpected. The NOLS Wilderness Medicine curriculum includes many advanced topics that other programs leave out such as dislocation reduction and epinephrine administration. In just two days, you will have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. This course is ideal for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals in remote locations. NOLS Wilderness Medicine courses are pre-approved by such organizations as the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other government agencies. This course does not* include CPR.

  • Custom Adventures

    Looking for a unique activity for your department, club, college house or any other university group? Create a custom outdoor adventure with the help of our staff.  We can offer a specialized outdoor adventure involving any of our regularly scheduled trips to meet the needs of your group.  Custom adventures can be scheduled at a time that works for you.  We run half-day and full-day trips within approximately 1-hour of Philadelphia.  We can accommodate groups between 5-20 people, depending on which activity you would like to participate in.  Pricing will vary depending on the number of participants, time and distance from campus.

    1. Do I have to be a member of the Pottruck Fitness Center to attend an Outdoor Adventure Trip?
      • Outdoor Adventure trips are open to any Penn community member or affiliate including: undergrad/grad students, faculty/staff, alumni, & hospital affiliates.  Pottruck members do receive a discount on trips.
    2. Can I bring someone that is not affiliated with Penn on an Outdoor Adventure?
      • Yes, Penn community members can bring a guest that is not affiliated with Penn. Family, friends, children, and spouses are welcome.
    3. Who typically attends the Outdoor Adventure trips?
      • The trips tend to be a mixture of undergrads, grads, and faculty staff. Usually approximately 50% of participants are graduate students in their mid to late 20’s with approximately 25% undergrads and 25% faculty/staff.
    4. How many people usually attend the Outdoor Adventure trips?
      • Most Outdoor Adventure trips have up to 10 people that attend. The downhill skiing trips have up to 50 people.
    5. What is included in the price of the Outdoor Adventure trips?
      • All trips include transportation, trained guides, instruction and all necessary equipment. Overnight trips usually include at least 1 meal.
    6. What do I need to bring on a typical Outdoor Adventure?
      • Typically, you just need to bring appropriate clothing/footwear, food and snacks for the day, water and a small backpack to carry your belongings. Weekend or extended trips may require you to bring your breakfast, lunch and snacks for the entire trip.
    7. Do you offer trips over academic breaks?
      • Yes, Penn Outdoor Adventures usually offers a Fall Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break trip which are up to 6 days long and explore areas around the country.
    8. Can I rent outdoor equipment for my own personal adventures?
      • Yes, most Outdoor Adventure equipment is available for rent. Check the website for available items and pricing.
    9. How do I register for an Outdoor Adventure trip?
      • To register either use the online registration portal on the Penn Campus Recreation website, or you can visit or call the membership services office in the Pottruck Fitness Center.
    10. How do I find out what Outdoor Adventures are offered?
      • All upcoming Outdoor Adventure trips are listed on the “Outdoor Adventure” section of the Penn Campus Recreation website. We communicate via social media on Facebook and Instagram @Pennoutdooradventure.  There is also an Outdoor Adventure List-Serve, where you can receive emails about upcoming trips and events.

  • Cancellation & Refund Policies 

    Penn Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any Outdoor Adventure trip due to weather, safety issues, or low enrollment.  Participants will receive notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the adventure is due to depart.  In the event of a Penn Recreation cancellation, participants will receive a full refund of any fees paid.

    Day Trips

    If a participant withdraws from a day trip prior to 48 hours of the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  No refunds will be given if participant withdraws within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Weekend Trips (2-3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from a weekend trip prior to 7 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 7-2 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Extended Trips (Longer than 3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from an extended trip prior to 14 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 14-7 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 7 days of trip departure.
