Upenn Recreation
The Sheerr Pool is open for a recreational swim during posted hours. The pool temperature is kept between 78-81 degrees year round. Please check the Department of Recreation website on a regular basis for updated information with regard to altered pool hours. The following guidelines apply while using the pool:
Use of the pool and/or sauna is voluntary and should be done at your own risk!

Pool Rules

  • Swim only when lifeguards are on duty
  • Shower before entering the pool or Sauna
  • Wear clean, appropriate swimwear
    • No see-through materials
    • Infants are required to wear swim diapers
    • No long sleeved shirts or long pants permitted
    • The use of swim caps is preferred
  • Dive only in designated areas (on the south side deep end)
  • Be considerate of others and share the pool space
  • Do not hang on lane lanes. Pass under lane lines to exit pool or change lanes
  • Use only US Coast Guard approved lifejackets
  • Clear the pool immediately when an emergency signal is given
  • Children must be supervised.
    • Children under the age of 6 must be supervised from in the water.
    • Children under the age of 16 must be supervised from on the pool deck
  • Inflatable floatation devices, including inner tubes, life jackets, and water wings are NOT permitted.
  • Food and drink should be kept off the pool deck. One unbreakable (non-glass) container is permitted for liquids
  • Do not chew gum in or around the pool
  • Use of diving board and starting blocks are NOT permitted
  • No flipping or diving backward from the side of the pool
  • Do not use the pool if you have open sores, a rash, or have experienced diarrhea in the past two weeks
  • No aggressive play or roughhousing
  • No spitting
  • No public displays of affection
  • No underwater breath holding activities are permitted
  • Diaper changing and/or changing clothes on the pool deck is NOT permitted
  • Individual or group swim instruction will be offered in the pool
    • Swim instruction by anyone who is not employed as a Campus Recreation Swim Instructor is prohibited
    • Swim lessons should take place in lanes 1 or 6 and patrons may be asked to accommodate these lessons.
  • Patrons under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal drugs are not permitted.

Sauna Rules

  1. Shower before entering the sauna, and shower prior to entering the pool
  2. Sit or lay on a towel
  3. Bathing suit attire or short sleeved athletic shirts and shorts are required – no long-sleeved shirts or pants are permitted
  4. No closed-toe shoes are permitted
  5. Exercise is not permitted in the sauna
  6. No one under the age of 18 may use the sauna
  7. This is a DRY HEAT sauna. Do not tamper with the heating mechanism or pour water over the rocks
  8. Patrons are responsible for regulating their own time
  9. Patrons under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal drugs are not permitted.
  10. Pregnant women are not permitted in the sauna
  11. Neither food nor drink is permitted in the sauna

Sauna Guidelines

  1. Consult your doctor prior to use. Individuals with certain medical conditions should not use the sauna
  2. Hydrate prior to entering and upon leaving the sauna
  3.  Reading materials or video games should not be used in the sauna
  4. Allow a “cool down” period before beginning any strenuous activity, or
    re-entering the pool or sauna
  5. Time in the sauna should be limited to 15 minutes or less
  6. The sauna should not be used as an attempt to control weight
  7. If you feel nauseous, dizzy or otherwise unwell, leave the sauna immediately and communicate your feelings to a lifeguard
